Flick

Less Browsing. More Watching.
Streaming movies online is a great way to have fun with your family, friends or significant other, but sometimes we spend countless time deciding on which movie to watch. Flick is here to help with that dilemma.

This mobile app is handy during movie nights, it helps you pick a movie to watch with whomever you’re with. Connect with your movie partner on the app to begin swiping right for movies you like or swipe left for movies you don't like, then be notified when you and your partner are both interested in the same movie.

The Challenge
Designing an app that requires mutualism from users could be difficult but also enjoyable. My challenge was to design a mobile app that’s intuitive with a bold interface and to also bring a fun experience for users. I wanted to design a product that’s helpful, valuable and entertaining.

Prime Goals
• Create simple components that promotes ease of usability
• Give users an enjoyable experience from start to finish
• Provide only useful information to avoid crowding
• Create a UI style guide that gives a meaningful identity

Research and Testing
Flick's main purpose is to help people choose a movie on their streaming platforms with their friends. In 2020, a survey was held in the U.S. which revealed that 25% of adults aged between 18 and 29 years old said that they watched or streamed movies everyday. Also, 65% of 18 to 29 year olds and 30 to 44 year olds said that they had a current streaming subscription, compared to just 41% of those aged 65 or above.

Due to a limited budget, I approached friends who are in their '20s/'30s and asked them a set of questions to answer. This method helped me identify what potential users would be looking for in an app that requires mutualism. After receiving feedback, I designed a high-fidelity prototype and sent it to the same people and had them complete a set of tasks for them to make comments to determine the usability of the product, which I used for making new changes within the app.
Key Insights from Participants
• Most enjoyed interactive apps such as Tinder or Bumble because it was easy and fun for them to use
• Disliked overcomplicated apps that contain too many pages or steps in order to complete the objective
• Users prefer having a more efficient alternative for adding other users

Obstacles
Designing onboarding pages can sometimes be difficult. Overloading a user’s mind during onboarding can turn them away, that’s why I had to carefully design a walkthrough by using minimal explanation and visuals on how to use the product.

Favorite Features
• Movie filters to help narrow down choices
• Alert notifications when both users like the same movie
• Find out which streaming platform you can watch the movie on
• Easily add others by scanning their QR code

Ready for Action!
Flick will give great experience for users by providing them an enjoyable journey towards finding the right movie between them and their friends or family. The overall visual look gives it a unique identity to work alongside the user experience.

Working on this project over a period of 6 weeks with a user-centric approach has taught me how valuable user feedback is while designing because users judge an experience largely based on how they felt at its peak and at its end, rather than the total sum or average of every moment of the experience.
